Sports Report for  the Academic Year 2007-08

“Sports is the play of the Spirit, Challenge of the Mind and Perfection of the Body”. Physical Education is an integral part of the total education process and aims at the development of physically; mentally, socially and emotionally fit citizens, through the medium of physical activities. The Department of Physical Education at St Xavier’s was established under the able leadership of the Director of Physical Education, Late Mr.P.M.V Tharakan, whose contribution in the field of Physical Education has been beyond comparison, both at               St. Xavier’s and for the State of Goa.

Young Students coming to the college with lots of enthusiasm and abundant energy are given ample scope to channelize and display their sporting talent. The inter class programmes in different games give students valuable experience in officiating and organization of events besides participation ,under the supervision and guidance of the Director of Physical Education  and Sports.  The Students are motivated to participate in the interclass activities in big way. This participation, in turn, helps to strengthen the basic human virtues of good social conduct like cooperation, conviction, commitment, understanding and sports man spirit. Needless to say the students benefit tremendously with regards to developing their personal fitness and general health.

 

The intra mural competitions, held within the campus give an ideal opportunity for first timers to participate in competitive sports and experience the joy of winning or to learn to take defeat in their stride. For regular player’s it is a stage to perform and gain recognition from their peers. Based on their performance in these events, Students are selected and coached to don the college colors at the inter-collegiate competitions organized by the Goa University and other Institutions.

 

St Xavier’s College can proudly boast of being the only college which gives its students an opportunity to participate in maximum number of inter collegiate activities and also of being the Champion College of Goa University, winning the highest number intercollegiate titles consistently in the last decade. Our college was duly recognized with the  ‘Best Sports College’ award by the Sports Journalists Association of Goa for the past four years  in  June 2004, July 2005, July 2006,and  July 2007.

 

St Xavier’s College participates in the Following events – Table Tennis, Badminton , Chess, Cross-country race, Cycling, Judo, Swimming, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Athletics, Tennis, Handball, Hockey , Cricket , Tennikoit, Weight-lifting, Power lifting  and Best Physique.

 

During the Academic year 2007-2008 the College Has won Seven Championships and claimed one runner’s up position. Our Men have won the  prestigious Table Tennis, Hockey and Athletics Championships and claimed the runners up in Handball. Our Women Won the Football, hockey, Athletics, Basketball and Cricket. And were runner’s up in Handball championships.

 

A number of students are selected annually to represent Goa University and Goa State teams at the National Level .The College gives due recognition to the se outstanding sports persons by means of felicitations and scholarships from the management and also scholarships instituted in the name of prominent sports persons .

 

Wining and loosing is a part and parcel of sports What really matters is, Working Hard , with a desire to do your best, with the true spirit of fair play ,which imbibes in us the qualities of sports man ship and helps in the Over all development of the personality
