Principal's Message 2017-18 - St. Xavier's College

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” ― Marcel Proust

My heart is filled with gratitude to the Almighty God for all His blessings showered on each one of us during the academic year 2016-17. The academic year that has gone by witnessed a number of activities in academic as well as the cultural field. Our students have made us proud by acquiring several laurels including state ranks at the Goa University examinations. For me, in particular, it was a learning experience. The year also witnessed, for the first time, the Alumni attending in large numbers a formal gathering organized by St. Xavier’s Alumni Association and it was such a pleasure to welcome them to their alma mater.

The beginning of the construction of Block E is a significant development in the expansion plans of St. Xavier’s College. The teaching, non-teaching staff and students have contributed financially through Canteen for a Cause, buying and selling of calendars, Donate a Brick and so on. I sincerely appreciate the sacrifice made by my entire staff and implore God’ immense blessings and hope to receive continued support towards the ongoing construction of Block E.

‘Time and tide wait for no one’, this is true especially as we wait and witness the arrival of another academic year 2017-18. This academic year is very dear to all of us. Education needs to be progressive and moving according to the need of the times. As society is undergoing further modernization, education should prepare our students to face this phenomenon of modernization.

Be thankful for each new challenge because it will build your strength and character. It is very important that students are equipped to take on these challenges and this can be achieved by imparting the right education. If students are not prepared to face this test of time, then students will be at a disadvantage as compared to other students in the country. Keeping this change in mind, Goa University has asked its affiliated colleges to implement the much-awaited Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). It will give an opportunity to every student to choose subjects of their interest and choice without difficulty.

CBCS, a calibrated approach is the key to its success. It is not a one-size-fits-all approach; rather it is a ‘cafeteria’ approach wherein students will be able to pick courses of their choice. The aim of CBCS is to provide opportunities to students and the choice of courses or subjects within a programme resembling an a la carte menu as compared to what is being offered at present. In the current programme students have limited or no choice, hence they have to accept what is being offered to them. However, under CBCS, students will have a wide choice in selecting subjects and they need to complete the required credits in the particular semester.

Implementation of CBCS is a challenge to the management as it will demand greater infrastructure, the flexibility of timetable and perhaps long hours on the campus for teachers and students. The challenge to every student is to make proper discernment in choosing the subjects at the beginning of the academic year.

As we are at the threshold of another academic year, I extend a warm welcome to all the students who will be enrolling themselves at St. Xavier’s College for this academic year. We assure you we would work towards your all-round development and at the same time, we would expect each one of you to cooperate and collaborate in fulfilling the rules and regulations laid down in the handbook so that hand-in-hand we work with zeal and fervour to help St. Xavier’s College attain greater heights. If you work really hard and are kind, amazing things will happen. In the encouraging words of Theodore Roosevelt “Believe you can and you’re halfway there”.
