Overview

St. Xavier’s College library is a hub of academic and research activity. It is open from 8.30 am to 4.00 p.m. At present, the library has a vast collection of over 70,000 books and around 140 journals. Its collection includes Reference Books, Encyclopaedia’s, Dictionaries, Journals (National, International and Peer Reviewed) Magazines, Newspapers, Newsletters, Educational CDs and DVDs for the use of students and staff. Any book can be procured through the Newgenlib Library Management Software. It has a spacious hall for the readers. The Open Access System allows direct access to the book shelves and its transactions are computerised. Internet browsing facilities are also available through LAN.

Achievements and Awards

  • Best Library Award bestowed upon St. Xavier’s College Library by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa.
  • Ranked in Top Ten Users List for using NLIST E-Resource from among 3500 colleges across India.

Activities of the Library

  • Newspaper Clipping Display
    A week long exhibition on newspaper clippings in the Library from 26thJanuary 2019.
  • Mobile Library Van Visit
    The Mobile Library Van of Goa State Central Library, Panaji under the theme “Come Let’s Read Yo Vachuya Pustake” visited the College this academic year. The main purpose of this activity was to promote reading habits among its users, The students and staff of the College could issue books and journals of their choice.
  • Annual Book Exhibition
    The annual book exhibition promoting an enormous collection of books from different publishers and booksellers organised in the College Seminar Hall received an overwhelming response.
  • Konkani Wikipedia Workshop
    A three day workshop on “Konkani Wikipedia” was jointly organised by the Department of Konkani and the Library for the FY/ SY/TYBA students of the Konkani Department to develop the Konkani Wikipedia.

New students desiring to be members of the Library will have to apply for membership in the prescribed form available in the library at the Book Issue Section counter.

Library Cards :

a. Library Card can be purchased from the office on payment of Rs. 30/-.

b. Library will issue three cards to members – Two Library cards for books for home reference for 4 days from Main Library and One Departmental Library Card for book issued from Department Library.

c. Only one book will be issued per card.

d. Library Cards are not transferable.

e. Students who are already members (regular students) of the Library will have to pay College fees and produce fee receipt at the BOOK Issue Section counter to get membership renewed.

f. Regular Students will have to renew Library Cards at the beginning of the academic year. Library cards not renewed will not be valid and books will not be issued to these students.

g. An amount of Rs. 70/- will be refunded from the Library deposit at the time of leaving the College on surrendering Library cards (Rs. 30/- will be deducted towards service charges). Refund of Library deposit will be done till August every year.

h. Students can avail books only up to the valid period of the Library Card. Books for next or previous class will not be issued on current Library Card.

DOs:
Keep wet umbrellas and raincoats outside the Library door during monsoons.
Keep bags on the Luggage Rack.
Sign the Attendance Register (kept on the Book Issue Section Counter) while entering/exiting the Library.
Take care of books, magazines, and other Library materials.
Keep books on the BIG TABLE after reference.
Check Pages before taking books.
Make proper use of reading tables and chairs by not disturbing the existing seating arrangement in the reading room.

 
 
DON’Ts:
Talk/Make noise in the library.
Mutilate or tear pages
Keep bags on floor.
Steal books or other library material.
