St Xavier’s College receives the Geno award
It is rightly said ‘It is hard to get to the top but still harder to stay up there’. St Xavier’s College, Mapusa has once again retained the top spot in the field of sports. For the 4th consecutive year
St Xavier’s has won the prestigious Geno Sports Award instituted by the Sports Journalist Association of Goa in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Goa.
Adjudged the best college in sports for the year 2006-2007 St Xavier’s College awarded a trophy and a certificate in recognition of its excellence in sports. The Award was presented by the Honorable Chief Minister of Goa Mr. Digambar Kamat to the Principal of the College Prof Newman Fernandes at a function held at Hotel Fidalgo, Panjim.
The honor is awarded on the basis of the overall performance of a college at the intercollegiate tournaments organized by Goa University.
St Xavier’s college is the only institute in Goa to take part in all the intercollegiate events organized by Goa University, giving the students an opportunity to participate and experience the taste of winning tournaments.
For the year 2006-2007 the College excelled in Athletics, Table tennis and won the runners up title in handball in men’s category. The women claimed the winner’s title in Table Tennis, Basketball,
Football, Athletics, Hockey, Cricket and the runner’s up title in Handball. St Xavier’s also won the runner’s up title in weightlifting event organized by Shri Damodar College Margao.
To name the best is Guillu Fernandes who was awarded the prize for the best athlete of Goa University and Tarini singh who was the member of the National football team.
Thirteen members of the university football team were from our college in women’s section and in men’s sections students represented in handball, hockey, football and athletics team for Goa University.
It is indeed an achievement for St Xavier’s College that provides ample of opportunities for its students to excel not only in academics but on the sports field as well and our students have done us proud.
