Fr. Zeferino D’Souza, President of Diocesan Society of Education, President of St. Joseph Vaz Educational Society and Administrator of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa
Joao Cruz Zeferino D’Souza was born in a picturesque and historical village of Arossim in the taluka of Mormugao, Goa, in 1950.
He completed his elementary education in Portuguese in the same village. He joined the the Minor Seminary of Saligao in 1962, soon after the Liberation of Goa. Subsequently after completing his studies in Minor Seminary went to the Major Seminary of Rachol to complete his Philosophical and Theological studies.
He also holds a Masters Degree in Sociology, University of Mysore and Diploma in Industrial Relations, Xavier Institute of Industrial Relations, New York. He was ordained priest on 27th April 1975.
He worked in various parishes in diversified capacities as Assistant Parish Priest, Chaplain, Parish Priest, Manager of different schools, etc.
After assessing, the Authorities felt that he would make difference in the field of education. Hence he was selected during the academic year of 2004-2005 to take up the post of Assistant to the Secretary of the Diocesan Society of Education and during the academic year 2005-2006 he was given the responsibility as the Secretary of the Diocesan Society of Education(DSE) which he held until the academic year 2017-2018, the longest serving Secretary of the Diocesan Society of Education.
When he laid down his office as the Secretary of the Diocesan Society of Education he was entrusted the responsibility of the Diocesan Society of Education as its President from the academic year 2018-2019 coupled with the additional charge as the Administrator of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, the premier institution of Higher Learning and the largest institution of Higher Education in the State of Goa.
During his tenure as the Secretary of DSE he tried not only to make DSE a Brand to reckon with in the field of education but to bring in discipline and impart quality education and give right direction in this highly competitive world and fast changing scenario.
During his journey as Secretary DSE saw a sizeable expansion and enhancement in terms of institutions, enrolment, quality, discipline, results’ percentage, etc. , – a sizeable difference indeed.
It is to be noted that a new educational Society came into existence, St. Joseph Vaz Educational Society, a sister concern of Diocesan Society of Education, on 26th February, 2015, in order to streamline the training of the Primary teachers. Hence St. Joseph Vaz Institute of Education, Cortalim, was opened on 12th June, 2017, to impart quality training to the Primary Teachers and also St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, was started on 13th July, 2017, as no science college was opened in Goa since 1988.
In order to document the existence of its institutions, its activities and its history “MONTAGE” was published, a colourful and pictorial legacy for the generations to come.
He is of the belief that “Education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world” as stated by Nelson Mandela.
