A one-day Seminar was organized by Goa State Council for Science and Technology in association with Department of Botany, St. Xavier’s College Mapusa, Goa on 11th of March 2019. This seminar was sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, New Delhi, on the occasion of World Wetland Day.
The programme began with the lighting of the lamp by the resource person Rev. Fr. Dr Bolmax Pereira, DST coordinator Ms Brenda Fernandes, Rev. Fr. Zeferino D’Souza Administrator of St. Xavier’s College, Dr Maria Fonseca Vice – Principal and Ms Wendy Martins Head Of Botany Department. The Resource person, DST coordinator and Administrator were welcomed with potted plants presented by Dr Harshala Gad, Dr Suraksha Dongrekar and Dr Maria A. D’Souza respectively.
College Administrator, Rev. Fr. Zeferino welcomed the guest, students and teachers present for the seminar and highlighted the importance of Wetlands in Goa. Ms Brenda Fernandes informed all those present about the theme of this year “Wetland and Climate Change”. The inaugural function ended with the vote of thanks conveyed by Mr Pravin Parab from DST.
In the technical session, Rev. Fr. Dr Bolmax Pereira discussed Wetland, its importance, Ramsar convention, how the Wetlands are directly connected to global climate change. He discussed the various Wetlands in Goa and their effects on Goans. The talk was very informative and interactive.
There was a fifteen minutes quiz Competition conducted on Wetlands too. The test items were sent by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, New Delhi. The first place was bagged by Mr Siddesh Korgaokar, Second by Ms Jerusha D’Souza and third place by Ms Nikita Machedo and three consolation prizes were won by Ms Magleeta Pereira, Ms Samruddhi Vaingankar and Ms Purva Kinalekar.
The comperes of the day were Ms Jerusha D’ Souza and Ms Virginia De Mello. The live moments were captured by Sudanshu Tari. The registration of members for this seminar was assisted by Ms Smruti Naik and Dr Suraksha Dongrekar. Assessment of the quiz was performed by Mr Conceicao De Souza, Dr Harshala Gad, Dr James D’Souza, Ms Smruti Naik and Dr Suraksha Dongrekar.
The programme ended with the valedictory function where the Principal Rev. Fr. Dr Jeronimo D’Silva encouraged all those present to protect our Wetlands. Feedback of the programme was shared by Ms Darshana Shetty, Mr Siddesh Korgaonkar and Dr Maria A. D’Souza. The Principal distributed the cash prizes and certificates to the winners of the quiz competition. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Wendy Martins.
