The Department of Chemistry of St. Xavier’s College organised One Day Symposium for the S.Y.B.Sc & T.Y.B.Sc Chemistry Students on 21st January 2019 titled, “Exploring the Exciting World of Chemistry”. The event was coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Janesline Fernandes and Assoc. Prof. Isabel de Noronha along with other faculty members.
Various Sessions and exciting competitions were held so as to develop interest in the subject of Chemistry for the students such as Guest Lecture, Oral Presentations, ChemWizards-Quiz based on Chemistry, ChemTunes-song based on Chemistry, ChemEnact- Skits based on Chemistry & CatWalk Chemistry- fashion show based on Chemistry related themes.
Chief Guest & Resource person was; Mr.Kashinath Sawant, Senior Executive, Quality Control, Cipla Pvt. Ltd., Verna Goa, accompanied by Mr. Shravan Redkar, Senior Executive, Teva Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., Verna Goa
In keeping with the Xavierian tradition the guests were welcomed by presenting them with potted plants. Ms. Merilyn began the formal inaugural with a prayer. The welcome address was given by the Administrator of the college, Fr. Zeferino D’Souza. The Head of Department, Dr. Teotone Vaz highlighted the Achievements of the Department and urged the students to take an active role in the Departmental activities. Our Principal Fr. Dr. Jeronimo D’Silva then addressed the gathering wherein he congratulated the Department for the previous achievements. Prof. Janesline Fernandes introduced the Chief Guest to the audience wherein she said that the students should be inspired by their achievements.
Mr. Kashinath Sawant spoke on “Chemistry: Career Avenues in the Pharmaceutical industry’’. He strongly focused on the importance of Chemistry & how it can help build a successful career in the Pharmaceutical Industry. He briefed the students about the various technical aspects one should acquire to work in the Pharmaceutical field. He said that the various sections in the Quality Control Laboratory are mainly classified into two, the Routine and the Non Routine section and also the processes that take place under the same, such as testing of dosage forms, Excipients, preparation of Specification and handling various instruments such asHPLC, GC, Autotitrator, IR spectrophotometer, Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer etc.He briefed the students about the selection procedure and the training one has to undergo upon selection. He stressed on the different positions one can pursue depending upon their interest, be it Quality Control, Research & development or Documentation. He encouraged and motivated the students to be determined and keep working hard towards their goal.
Oral Presentations were given by 7 teams on the theme “Recent Advances & Applications of Chemistry in our Daily life”. Each topic was unique and interesting, the judges were Prof. Kathleen Pinto, Prof. Edwina Pereira and Dr Vinod Mandrekar. The on-stage events were ChemTunes- a song based on Chemistry, Catwalk Chemistry- fashion show had students present the Chemistry themes with attire and narrations highlighting the use of chemical compounds. ChemEnact- wherein the students explained different discoveries in the form a skit with an overall message that Chemistry is a part of our life may it be in research or making chemistry understandable. The ChemWizards- Quiz was organised by Prof. Janesline Fernandes and the Quiz Master Dr. Dattaprasad Narulkar. The most intriguing part was to see the 7 teams competing, as well as the audience guessing the answers which had spot prizes.
At the end of the event, all the winners of the competitions were awarded Medals and Certificates at the hands of the Principal, Fr. Dr. Jeronimo D’Silva. Ms. Charissa proposed the Vote of Thanks as a sign of appreciation. The Chemistry Symposium overall was a Great Success and also motivation for the students.
