The Go Green Initiative club organized a talk on ‘Home Gardening’ - St. Xavier's College

The Go Green Initiative club organized a talk on ‘Home Gardening’. It was held on 2ndFebruary 2019 in the Seminar Hall of St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa. The talk was organized by the co-ordinator of the club Ms. Sabina Sales e Dias. Around 30 students and 6 teachers attended the talk.  Ms. Sabina Sales e Dias introduced the guest speaker Dr. Annie Fernandes. She mentioned about her enthusiasm and passion for gardening and also her other hobbies like cooking, baking etc. Dr. Annie has won the award for the best garden three times by Botanical society of Goa. Dr. Annie began her talk by telling the audience about her love for plants. She said plants needed to be felt loved for better growth. She also spoke about how plants benefit us in many ways by giving us fruits, vegetables, oil, oxygen to breathe, etc. She explained about the working of the plant body systems and the different needs of a plant. She educated us on how to take care of one’s own home garden using eco-friendly methods, without letting anything go waste or causing harm to the environment. Dr. Annie gave tips to prepare compost at home using waste from the kitchen and dried leaves of the garden. She explained the use of EM (effective micro-organisms) for compost and enrichment of the soil. She also spoke about cost effective methods used for maintaining the garden and how the produce obtained from your own garden can benefit our health and save one from buying fruits and vegetables from the market  that contain harmful chemicals leading to cancer and other diseases. She showed us the  pictures of plants, flowers, trees, fruits, etc. growing in her garden and also spoke on the ways she managed to get the rarest species and provide optimum conditions to get the best growth for all  the plants. Ms. Annie spoke wonderfully on the topic of home gardening and concluded her talk by quoting on the beauty and life of trees, and encouraged all students and teachers to protect plants and grow trees. At the end of the programme the vote of thanks was delivered by Imrana Shaikh the secretary of the club.
