The Department of Chemistry, St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa-Goa, organised the 3rd Annual ‘Festival of Innovation: Goa’s Young Innovators’, a state level competition on innovations for Schools, Higher Secondary Schools and College students, on 5th January 2019. The convenors of the event were Ms Shivta H. Mayenkar, Ms Sheryl D ‘Cruz and Ms Flavia S. Travasso, Assistant Professors, Department of Chemistry.
The event commenced with a powerpoint presentation prepared by Ms Flavia S. Travasso, on innovations done by some young Indians from across the country.
Fr. Zeferino D’Souza, the College Administrator, welcomed the gathering and congratulated the Department of Chemistry for organising this event. He emphasised on the sharing of innovations and suggestions, in order to make great changes in our day-to-day life.
Dr. (Fr.) Jeronimo D’Silva, the Principal, addressed the students as budding future scientists. He urged them to be aware of the surroundings and to utilize their time in making simple useful innovations, using their intelligence and creativity.
Dr Teotone Vaz, Head, Department of Chemistry, introduced the department to the audience and highlighted the academic achievements of the Chemistry students during the past academic year.
Ms Flavia S. Travasso introduced the Chief Guest, Dr Jennifer Lewis e Kamat, Chairperson, Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Women’s Wing) and Director, Kamat Infra Tech Pvt. Ltd., Panjim. Dr Jennifer in her inspiring Keynote Address spoke of the level of Indian innovations on the international platform and about making marketable innovations. She aptly said that “To make an innovation, find problems so as to find solutions”.
A total of 33 institutions participated in this Festival of Innovations and showcased their talent, creativity and ideas using their innovative working models, making use of technology for a better society. The event also saw active participation of students in the Poster Making, Quiz and Just-A-Minute competitions. Dr Jennifer gave away the prizes to the winners of the different competitions in various categories.
The State Level event concluded with Ms Shivta H. Mayenkar proposing the Vote of Thanks. It was a hugely successful event which witnessed young minds from across Goa displaying their innovations for a better future.
