The Department of Physics St. Xavier’s College Mapusa, organized a Guest lecture on the topic “Gravitational waves and LIGO (Einstein’s Dream Come True)” for S.Y. B.Sc and T.Y. B.Sc (Physics) students. The lecture was held on 3rd August 2018 at 10:45 am in the college seminar hall. The resource person was Prof. Arun Kulkarni, Professor in Physics at Birla Institute of Technology & Science – Pilani KKB- Goa Campus. Principal, Dr.(Fr.) Jeronimo D’Silva welcomed the guest speaker and the participants. In his address, he also mentioned that the important research on Gravitational waves has very good scope in future for our students. The coordinator, Dr Reshma Raut Dessai introduced the guest speaker, Prof. Arun Kulkarni.
In his talk Dr AVK mentioned that it was 100 years back, Einstein’s gave hypothesis that when massive accelerating objects (neutron stars or black holes orbiting each other) would disrupt space-time in such a way that ‘waves’ of distorted space would radiate from the source. On September 14, 2015, for the first time, scientists observed ripples in the fabric of space-time called gravitational waves, arriving at the earth from a cataclysmic event in the distant universe. This effect confirmed the hypothesis given by Albert Einstein in his general theory of relativity and opened a new window onto the cosmos. He also explained through video how binary stars revolving around each other merge emitting gravitational waves. He informed the students that the Indian government after the detection of gravitational waves announced setting up of 4 meters LIGO interferometer. The work towards LIGO interferometer has already started and this will require cutting edge technology. He urged students to take up their studies seriously and exhorted them to join the effort of setting up LIGO India. LIGO-India project of India is expected to be ready by 2024. He concluded by informing about some other projects and the kind of research taking place at IUCAA Pune. Very patiently Prof. Kulkarni answered all the questions poised by students. The talk concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Shri. Manoj Salgaonkar. The guest session was ably compeered by Ms Namita Rane of T.Y. B.Sc. class.
