The Philosophy dept organized a talk on “Euthanasia from a Legal Perspective” for students

The Department of Philosophy, St. Xavier’s College held a talk cum interactive session on “Euthanasia from Legal Perspective” on 16th August 2018 in the College Seminar Hall. The session was delivered by Dr Sharmila Ghuge, Assistant Professor at Jitendra Chauhan College of Law, Mumbai. Dr Ghuge has also published a book, “Legalizing Euthanasia: A Pedagogue’s Perspective”.

During the talk, Dr Ghuge stressed various aspects of euthanasia and how our society reacts to it. With growing medical technology, human beings are being able to be kept alive on life support systems, she added. She also enlightened the audience on various laws that govern euthanasia and how India hasn’t legalised it till date. Various ways of euthanasia i.e. voluntary, involuntary, passive and active euthanasia and how each works, were discussed during the session. Issues such as prosecutors and advocates for filing cases with regards to euthanasia were also brought up.

It was followed by an interactive session wherein students in the audience got their queries answered by the resource person. The talk was attended by 102 students from First, Second and Third Year of Philosophy.
