The Department of Chemistry of St. Xavier’s College recently organised an educational visit to the Directorate of Food & Drugs Administration (FDA) office, Bambolim-Goa for its S.Y.B.Sc. Students.
During the visit Mrs. Maria Coutinho, Head, Food Testing Department, briefed the students on the two Acts namely Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (1954) and Prevention of Food Safety Standard Act (2000) that are in practice for food safety protection. The students later saw the different instruments used for food testing such as Iodine Value meter, E-Mat (Milk Adulteration Tester), Thermogravimetric Analyzer, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatograph, Nitrogen and protein exterminator, etc. They also witnessed the testing of food samples in the Wet Chemical Laboratory.
Whereas Mrs. Nilima V. Mishal, Sr. Scientific Officer (Drugs) briefed the students about the various tests performed primarily on narcotics, drugs, liquor and cosmetics and the various terminologies such as IP, USP and BP. The students got to view the various instruments which are used for drug testing like Millipore filter, HPLC, UV and IR spectrophotometers, Disintegration and Dissolution Testers.
