The St. Xavier’s College Inspectorate of Factories and Boilers-SXC Linkage aims at creating awareness about laboratory safety in particular as part of the work ethos in industry today. The college also has an MoU with the Inspectorate of Factories & Boilers, Institute of Safety, Occupational Health and Environment, Altinho, Panaji Goa. As part of this MoU it extends its facilities of Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Flame Photometry, Gas Chromatography, etc. to the students of the Masters Programme (M.Sc) in Physical Chemistry of the college.
This year the linkage organised a talk on ‘Safety in the
Laboratory’ for the students of SYBSc on 24th March 2017. The talk was
delivered by Mr. A. A. D’Souza, Public Relations Officer, Inspectorate of
Factories & Boilers, Institute of Safety, Occupational Health and
Environment, Altinho, Panaji Goa. Mr. Mahesh Nair, Convenor of the Linkage
welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest speaker. Dr. Teotone Vaz Head,
Dept. of Chemistry then welcomed the speaker with a horal offering. ‘
Mr. D’Souza who has over 30 years of experience in the held of inspecting various laboratories for safety procedures emphasised on the importance of safe practices in the laboratory while elaborating on the same with several examples of negligent behaviours which could result in accidents in the laboratory. Speaking on the role of the student of Chemistry, he stated that personnel without a chemistry background working in factory/company laboratories may not have sufficient safety education and therefore, stressed on the importance of the chemist in providing the necessary awareness and proper guidance in the aspect of working safely in the laboratory in order to minimise the risk of laboratory accidents.
