ICAR plays a major role in promotion of agriculture in Goa. It is mainly involved in research activities aimed at improving productivity of the major cash crops in Goa. The objective of the linkage between ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) and St. Xavier’s College is to expose students to different research activities at ICAR and to encourage them to avail of opportunities.
B.Sc. Botany students of First Year, Second Year and Third Year were accompanied by Dr. Emilia Mascarenhas and Ms. Wendy Martins to ICAR on 17th February 2016. Dr. Safeena S. A. (Scientist Horticulture and Landscaping) from ICAR welcomed the students. She gave an introduction of the ICAR Complex, explaining its aims and various research programmes conducted. ICAR aims at improvising technologies, conducting research and spreading awareness, mainly in the field of resource management, crop management, fisheries and animal sciences. She further briefed students about the various research activities such as crop improvement, crop protection, agricultural entomology, pathology, grafting of plants, floral crops, fruits and unexploited crops. Besides, they have come up with software called soil fertility calculator, which calculates the amount of fertilizers to be added in a given area and conducts soil testing. They have created models of integrated farming systems, which are shown to farmers to adopt in their fields.
Dr. Sashi Kumar then led the group to the ICAR research fields and plantations. He explained the various ongoing field projects. Biofertilizer production techniques such as vennicompost unit, hydroponics unit for production of fodder grass were shown. The animal breeding centre was visited. The field trip was an enriching experience for the students
