INSPECTORATE OF FACTORIES AND BOILERS LINKAGE - St. Xavier's College

Convenor : Ms Janesline Fernandes

Co-Convenor : Ms. Maripi Swaroopa & Ms. Jocelyn Fernandes

The linkage aims at exposing the students with the structure and working of various instruments and also at understanding the work ethos of industries. The College has an MoU with the inspectorate of factories and boilers, Altinho, Panjim – Goa under which it extends facilities of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer, Gas Chromatography, etc. to the students of the M.Sc programme in Physical Chemistry. The linkage has been renewed for the next five years from January 2014. The students of the Department of Biotechnology visited the John Distilleries Pvt. Ltd., Cuncolim Industrial estate on 26th of September 2013. The entire process of fermentation used in the manufacture of various wines and spirits such as brandy and whiskey was demonstrated. They were also briefed on the entire process of distillation, quality assurance of the finished product and most importantly on the treatment of the spend wastes and effluents. The Post Graduate students of the department of Chemistry attended a talk on 31st August 2013, delivered by research scholar, Mr. Pradnyesh Satardekar, pursuing a Ph. D. programme at University of Trento, Italy. The topic was “Powder to Power: Fabrication of Metal Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cells”. He made the students aware of the PhD. programmes held abroad with scholarships and gave them guidelines on how to apply for PhD. programmes. He also motivated the students to go in for higher studies in the area of chemistry research. The students of the TYBSc Biotechnology and Chemistry were acquainted with the structure and working of instruments such as the Gas Chromatography, High Pressure Liquid Chromatography and IR Spectroscopy in the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry, at St. Xavier’s College. The utility of these analytical instruments for chemical, microbiological and toxicological studies were also explained.
